At all of them I chastised myself for my own mean-spiritedness and hypocrisy (I too am married, and once devoted a summer to it) but determined that at some point when not at a wedding I would work out why I minded it all so much. Collectively, they seemed to go on for too long and to involve too much effort, whether it was the effort of the congregation to reach these much-loved remote places or the effort of the bride and groom to coordinate flowers, music, seating plans, personalized vows, homemade confetti and take-home marmalade. White weddings, gold weddings weddings in village churches, on beaches, at woolen mills. There were too many weddings that summer. ![]()

BRANDON SWANSON ![]() ![]() Terry from the Say Cheese and Die books is pretty likable, and I especially like how he helps Greg and Shari out in the sequel. ![]() These include Eddie in A Night in Terror Tower, Terri in Ghost Beach, Josh in Welcome to Dead House and the Wald twins in Beast from the East. The best, for me, are the ones who work in tandem with the protagonists, even if some of them have their moments of obnoxiousness. These include Tara from The Cuckoo Clock of Doom (obviously), Ginny in Bad Hare Day, Mickey in The Barking Ghost and Greg and Pam in Don't Go to Sleep. They're bratty and annoying nine times out of 10, occasionally tolerable and sometimes barely factor into the plot (Mitzi in Attack of the Mutant, for example).įor me, the worst siblings are the ones who aren't just bratty and/or annoying but are straight-up cruel to the protagonists. Goosebumps siblings are an interesting breed. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments The marriage game by alison weir![]() ![]() Under mounting pressure to take a husband, Elizabeth encourages their advances without ever committing a delicate, politically-fraught balancing act which becomes known as ‘The Marriage Game’.īut treading this dangerous line with Robert Dudley, the son and grandson of traitors, could cost her the throne. The formidable young Queen is regarded by most of Christendom as a bastard, a heretic and a usurper, yet many princes covet Tudor England and seek her hand in marriage. ![]() Many believe them to be lovers, and there are scurrilous rumours that Elizabeth is no virgin at all. Queen Elizabeth presents herself as the Virgin Queen but cannot resist her dashing but married Master of Horse, Lord Robert Dudley. Bestselling historian Alison Weir brings all her knowledge of Elizabeth I to vivid life in a novel of intrigue, sex, plots, mysteries and tragedies, amid all the colour and pageantry of the Tudor court. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Reckless Traveler by Walter Rhein![]() ![]() Mental health terrifies everyone simply because nobody, not even the experts, seems to know how it works. The short version is that he was “eritably knocked off his horse by two out-of-control, gaslighting shrinks at the tender age of 23.” More than a decade later, the unfortunate ruling was overturned. In the introduction, Lewy gives some tantalizing details about his history of mental illness. ![]() There is a legitimate chaos in this book that is quite compelling, and the poems are all included as text and as a component of colorful collages like you’d see on a lamp post in a foreign country. Lewy is a book of poetry that is much closer to Kurt Cobain than William Wordsworth, and I don’t mean that as an insult. ![]() ‘Gaslit By A Madman: Illuminated Poems’ by Max J. Poems work a lot better when you read them out loud, and sometimes you can change a room by shouting words into it. If you charge right through, the effect is akin to running a marathon at the Louvre. A poem forces you to slow down and let the gears of your mind start spinning. Poetry works like a packet of seasoning in the middle of a plate of good but otherwise homogeneous food. I appreciate the occasionally well-crafted song lyric, and enjoy the effect when somebody like Tolkien throws a poem into his prose. I have a degree in English, so I’m not unfamiliar with poems, but here in the wild I don’t stumble across them with great frequency. Every now and then I pick up a book of poetry. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Jodie sweetin memoir![]() She only had two acting credits for the rest of the '90s, on the Joey- Matt-and- Andrew Lawrence sitcom Brotherly Love and on Party of Five, but Sweetin had gone back to school in the meantime, graduating from Los Alamitos High School in 1999 and enrolling at Chapman University in Orange, Calif. But that set the pattern of the kind of drinking that I would do." "That first drink gave me the self-confidence I had been searching for my whole life. "I probably had two bottles of wine, and I was only 14," she wrote in her 2009 memoir unSweetined, recalling the night of Candace Cameron's wedding, when she married Valeri Bure. (Mary-Kate Olsen would later have health troubles that required treatment, but she and Ashley were only 8 in 1995.) While she didn't fall out, or even lose touch, with her Full House family, Sweetin was the one who seemed to have the most trouble readjusting to regular life in those first years after the show ended. ![]() 5/23/2023 0 Comments 20th century ghost joe hill![]() ![]() They aren't scary, nor do I think they are meant to be. Short stories with a sometimes paranormal slant maybe, but not horror. There is the self-aware, post-modernist work in which a well-known anthologist gets savagely schooled by a contributor about what constitutes "The Best in Modern Horror," the unsettling tale about the effect of family disguises and games on a son ("My Father's Mask"), the powerful, sustained novella about an autistic brother who can construct marvelous, imprisoning labyrinths, a story which never loses its horror or its humanity ("Voluntary Committal"), or the masterpiece-I do not use the term lightly-about an "inflatable" childhood friend ("Pop Art") that has something to teach every reader about disability and transcendence. And then there are times when Hill's writing is so good that comparisons don't arise. ![]() ![]() Hill, the son of Stephen King, inherits his father's empathy for the ordeals of childhood as well as his artfulness in constructing a tale, but he also possesses a warmth and an elegance all his own.Īt times his stories are chilling and gripping like the horror fiction of King ("The Black Phone"), but at other times they are gentle and elegiac like Bradbury ("Better Than Home") or quirky and humorous like Vonnegut ("Bobby Conroy Comes Back from the Dead").
